17Percent has been running since 2009, thanks mainly to the efforts of founder Sam Hall, and the goodwill of a diverse team of womderful volunteers (past and present) who are passionate about seeing more plays by women, with good roles for women in those plays, but with no external financial assistance at all.
We believe that one of the best ways to see more work by women is to produce more work by women, which is why we have re-booted our She Writes showcase. We all believe that it is vital (especially now, in this odd climate for feminism and women in the UK, and actually, worldwide,) that the people telling stories on stage and acting out those stories, should be representative of a more equal world. When 83 out of 100 plays are written by men, this is not representative of an equal world.
She Writes addresses this imbalance in who is telling the story. Women have more stories to tell. About men and women. About what concerns them individually and uniquely. About what concerns them on the world stage. 17Percent desperately wants to tell those stories – but we now need help to tell them.
At our re-boot in London at the Canal Cafe, the audience all said: this is such an important thing; this must continue; giving female writers a stage, to see, explore and develop their writing; and, letting an audience see what women writers have to offer.
So now that we have tested the waters, and the waters are good, we have started a fundraising campaign – to help us get a regular showcase going.
We have set a target of £800 which will help us recoup some of the initial investment from the first two events and put the remainder into developing the next showcase. If you can spare anything, we would be really grateful, as (like on a familiar advert,) every little helps. We have a range of perks on offer if you do – including a unique marked up set of rehearsal scripts for one kind funder, and some limited edition She Writes mugs.
Even if you can’t donate financially – then please do help by spreading the word about our campaign, or just telling people about 17Percent. And if you can donate – please do so by visiting our campaign here. Thanks for any help you can give.
