Theatre West in Bristol have contacted me with this great opportunity specifically for women playwrights.
Theatre West is a Bristol based theatre company with over ten years experience of developing new writing in the region. Each year they produce a ten week season of new writing at the Alma Tavern in Bristol, which was last year comprised of five new plays and three play readings. In 2008 they worked with Natalie McGrath to develop and produce her play Metal Remains which went on to be shortlisted for the 2009 Meyer Whitworth award.
Due to the under-representation of women writers in previous years, they are ring-fencing a slot in their autumn season and are inviting submissions of scripts from women writers living and working in the South-West*. Scripts must satisfy the following requirements
– Have a running time of around an hour
– Require a maximum of three actors
– Be simply set, bearing in mind the restrictions of working in a small, first floor studio theatre
– Be an original piece of work that hasn’t had a public performance
The deadline for submission of final scripts is 20th July.
All scripts will be read by the artistic directors of Theatre West who will shortlist up to four plays. These will be further considered by a panel made up of professionals involved in new writing and a decision will be made by mid August. The chosen script will be further developed with the support of Theatre West and be performed at the Alma in a two week run during the autumn season. The writer will receive a fee of £1,000. Up to three runners up will be performed as rehearsed readings during the season.
If you think you may submit a script would you please register your interest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org This is not binding – it’s helpful for them to assess the likely level of interest, to plan ahead and will allow them to keep in touch directly about the submission process.
